Berlin Episode 1 “The Energy of Love” Recap & Review

The recap of the tv show Berlin Episode 1 kicks off with Berlin bidding farewell to his third wife as they navigate the complexities of divorce, leaving him disheartened about the end of his marriage. In his narration, Berlin reflects that only two things can transform a bad day into a great one: love or a substantial heist.

The Energy of Love

A car pulls up beside him, and he hops in, introducing four others as his crew. Keila, an electronic engineering expert, though pathologically shy; Roi, a skilled thief and Berlin’s protege; Damián, a daytime professor and nighttime criminal mastermind; and Bruce, the versatile jack of all trades.

The gang disrupts a posh dinner party by masquerading as police officers. Berlin privately informs the host, presenting a fake search warrant and accusing him of illegal antiquities trafficking. Guided to his vault, the man selects a specific chalice. Berlin, disclosing he's not a real cop, announces the item's confiscation.

When a guest tries to play the hero, Berlin swiftly quashes the attempt. Advising him to cease the disturbance, especially for the sake of proving himself to his mistress, Berlin emphasizes that sacrificing one's life for love isn't worthwhile. Faced with a gun, the man changes his tune, apologizing and pleading for his life, revealing Berlin's struggle with his divorce.

Following that, the gang heads to Paris and secures hotel rooms. Berlin introduces a new team member, Cameron, who has recently emerged from a mental hospital, having faced significant challenges.

Roi's unmistakable interest in Cameron is apparent from the moment he lays eyes on her. Even Berlin takes notice and advises the young man to maintain a strictly platonic relationship with Cameron. Additionally, he assigns Roi the responsibility of looking out for the new team member.

The team delves into planning their next heist, centered around the fourth-century chalice valued at about 40,000 euros. Their strategy involves using the chalice to deceive a priest, gaining access to his church. Once inside, they plan to excavate a hole and make off with 63 jewels worth a staggering 44 million euros.

The jewels are slated for transportation to Paris's largest and most prestigious auction house, conveniently situated opposite the church. This proximity becomes their point of entry. The church’s crypt, a mere 5 meters away from the auction house, necessitates navigating through hidden ancient tunnels.

The next day, they visit the priest and assume the guise of an excavation team from the Polytechnic University of Salamanca. Keila strategically plants 650 online references about the team, creating a convincing facade.

The priest, convinced of their legitimacy, eagerly anticipates their findings, hoping they will unearth evidence supporting the claim that his church might be the oldest in Paris.

Claiming to possess evidence of potential treasure beneath the church, the team convinces the eager priest to grant them access to the crypt for excavation. Their next move involves surreptitiously entering a man's residence and installing surveillance cameras.

The man in question, François, holds the crucial knowledge about the impending arrival of the jewels. The plan hinges on determining the date of the last shipment to time their heist. Positioned strategically, their hotel directly faces François's residence, and through covert surveillance, they aim to gather more details about the shipment.

After successfully breaking into François's house and installing hidden cameras, the team retreats to the hotel. Roi attempts to establish a connection with Cameron but fails, as she perceives him as Berlin's subservient ally.

Meanwhile, Bruce and Keila discreetly bury the chalice in the church, creating the appearance of uncovering an antique beneath the sacred grounds.

Amidst their interactions, it becomes evident that Bruce is a charismatic individual with a casual attitude towards relationships, a trait Keila does not appreciate, particularly in matters of intimacy.

Simultaneously, Berlin confides in Damián about his frustrations and disappointment stemming from his divorce. Damián, being married himself, believes that Berlin has yet to find the right person.

The two stay up, monitoring François, and it is during this surveillance that Berlin becomes captivated by François's wife. This fascination leads Berlin to follow her to a bar and listen to her singing.

Later, Berlin confides in Damián about meeting someone, and Damián cautions him against complicating matters by getting involved with their target's wife.

The next morning, they deceive the priest into believing they discovered the chalice under the crypt, securing his approval to continue digging. Berlin enlists Roi's assistance in charming Camille, his newfound infatuation. However, she adopts a coy demeanor, leaving Berlin second-guessing himself.

Meanwhile, the priest requests the chalice to take back to Spain and showcase to the university dean as a testament to their team's success. Damián is unsettled by this plea and attempts to dissuade the priest.

Despite his efforts, the ex-convict, backed by the priest, gains the upper hand. Damián reluctantly relinquishes the chalice and promptly alerts Berlin of the situation. In response, Berlin instructs Roi to do everything possible to recover the chalice.

Unwilling to personally pursue the priest, Berlin is preoccupied with preparations for an outing with Camille after overhearing that her husband forgot their date.

Berlin Episode 1 ends on a cliffhanger as disappointed by her husband, Camille decides to attend the Opera alone, presenting Berlin with an opportunity. Adorning his tuxedo, Berlin orchestrates a coincidental meeting with her as he exits his hotel.
