Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 5 begins where the Episode 4 has ended. It's August 2007, one year after the failed escort mission. Suguru and Shoko help Satoru showcase the progress he's made using the Limitless. He automates the Infinity, runs a continuous reverse cursed technique, and is mastering domain expansion. Satoru distinguishes himself as the lone strongest, while Suguru visibly wears himself out. Satoru even asks if Suguru's lost weight, but Suguru assures him things are fine.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 5 - Anime Recap
Satoru manages missions independently, and Shoko never undertakes dangerous assignments. This leaves Suguru solo on missions during a busy summer with cursed spirits swarming continuously. He feels trapped in a mentally taxing cycle of constant exorcism and consuming cursed spirits—an experience he likens to eating a dirty rag. He attempts to escape the filth in the shower but is plagued with persistent thoughts. For a year, Suguru tries to convince himself to remain on the righteous path, a jujutsu sorcerer saving people. However, the clapping of the children of the star from that incident haunts him, blending with the rapidly falling water until Suguru cracks slightly, muttering "monkeys" to himself.
Afterward, Suguru occupies a lounge with a vending machine, solitary. Yu Haibara strolls down the hallway, noticing Suguru alone, and opts to join him. Enthusiastically, he shares details about his upcoming mission, and Suguru, in turn, queries him about being a sorcerer. Suguru asks if Yu finds sorcery agreeable and if it seems too challenging. Yu responds with a nonchalant attitude, stating he doesn't ponder it too deeply; he just wants to continue excelling in whatever he can do well.
A woman suddenly enters the room, inquiring about the boys' preferences in women. Yu proudly declares his ideal woman is one with a healthy appetite. Suguru is taken aback by Yu's response, but Yu assures him that he can sense the woman is a good person. Yu courteously excuses himself and the woman, introducing her as Yuki Tsukumo, a special-grade sorcerer.
Suguru recognizes Yuki as the sorcerer infamous for neglecting missions and wandering overseas. Initially, Yuki pouts as a jest, claiming to dislike Jujutsu High. However, in reality, Yuki expresses her belief that Jujutsu Headquarters merely addresses the symptoms of cursed spirits, not the underlying issue. She aspires to create a world without cursed spirits and invites Suguru to discuss how to achieve that goal.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Recap
Two potential approaches are discussed: humanity breaking away from cursed energy to eliminate it entirely or optimizing cursed energy to grant everyone control. Toji Zenin, the person with zero cursed energy, represented the former, but with his demise, Yuki investigates the latter. She explains that sorcerers, who can control cursed energy, don't generate cursed spirits. Suguru proposes a radical solution—exterminating all non-sorcerers. As Yuki delves into the logistics of such an idea, Suguru begins to hear the clapping in his head, blending with the rain outside.
Yuki questions Suguru about his feelings toward non-sorcerers, but he struggles to provide a definitive answer. Within him, there's a conflicted perspective that both devalues and harbors resentment toward non-sorcerers, unable to distinguish their admirable qualities from their flaws. Simultaneously, another part of him seeks to reject these negative sentiments and embrace the path of a righteous sorcerer.
Yuki perceives that neither of these conflicting sides reflects Suguru's true feelings. She advises him to make a decisive choice that will shape his genuine emotions toward non-sorcerers. Following this conversation, Yuki leaves, slightly disappointed about not meeting with Satoru. Before departing on her motorcycle, she informs Suguru that Tengen is stable, thanks to the emergence of another Star Plasma Vessel.
Nanami returns early from a mission with Yu, visibly upset and expressing frustration over being misinformed about their target. The cursed spirit they were supposed to exorcise was believed to be a grade 2, but it turned out to be a local deity that killed Yu. Suguru advises Nanami to take some rest, but he, too, is shaken. He likens working as a jujutsu sorcerer to a marathon, with only the bodies of his comrades awaiting him at the end.
During his own mission, Suguru exorcises a curse disturbing a village, only for the blame to be placed on two young sorcerers. These girls, beaten and locked in a cage, are unable to defend themselves. Despite Suguru's attempts to explain that he dealt with the true cause of the disturbances, the villagers remain convinced that the girls are responsible. Seeing the two girls, fellow sorcerers, defenseless, Suguru makes a definitive choice regarding his feelings toward non-sorcerers.
Suguru commits mass murder, taking the lives of over a hundred villagers in an incident investigated by Jujutsu High. Subsequently, Suguru is expelled and sentenced to death, and the report swiftly reaches Masamichi Yaga. Yaga attempts to explain the unfolding tragedy to Satoru, revealing that Suguru has even murdered his own non-sorcerer parents. However, Satoru, in a state of disbelief and distress, rejects the grim reality.
Furious and confused, Satoru struggles to come to terms with the shocking revelations. Masamichi, equally baffled, can't provide a rational explanation and admits his own uncertainty about the situation. Meanwhile, in Shinjuku, Shoko attempts to smoke on a street corner but lacks a lighter.
Suguru appears and offers a light, initiating a seemingly friendly conversation despite the grave events. Shoko confronts Suguru about the reports, and he confesses to their accuracy. Suguru explains his intention to create a world without non-sorcerers, but Shoko dismisses his reasoning as childish. She contacts Satoru, who arrives in the city to confront Suguru personally.
In the crowded streets of Shinjuku, Satoru demands an explanation while Suguru walks away from him. Suguru stops and confirms the truth of what Shoko conveyed, feeling no need to elaborate. Satoru argues that exterminating all non-sorcerers is an impossible task, but Suguru believes that Satoru, with his abilities, could make it entirely possible.
Satoru learns about the tragic events from Masamichi Yaga and is in disbelief. Suguru has committed heinous crimes, including murdering his own non-sorcerer parents, and has been sentenced to death by Jujutsu High. Satoru, consumed by fury, questions Yaga, who admits to being as perplexed and uncertain about the situation as Satoru himself.
In Shinjuku, Suguru encounters Shoko attempting to light a cigarette, and they engage in a seemingly amicable exchange. Suguru confesses to the crimes, revealing his intention to create a world without non-sorcerers. Shoko contacts Satoru, posing a profound question about whether his strength comes from being Satoru Gojo or if being the strongest defines Satoru Gojo. Frustrated, Satoru dismisses the question and implores Suguru to come to his senses.
Suguru, resolute in his chosen path, walks away, expressing that he's committed to doing his best to achieve his goals. His parting words to Satoru include an acknowledgment that Satoru can kill him if necessary, as there is a purpose in that action. Despite taking aim with Hollow Technique: Purple, Satoru can't bring himself to murder his best friend. Returning to school, he sits alone on the steps, reflecting on the situation. Masamichi finds him, and they discuss the events. Satoru realizes that his strength is only effective in saving those already prepared to be rescued.
Meanwhile, Suguru utilizes his power to seize control of the remnants of the Time Vessel Association, exemplified by making an example of Shigeru Sonoda. Suguru kills Shigeru, wipes the blood from his face, and mentally solidifies his hatred for "monkeys," fully committing to that feeling.
Sometime later, Satoru encounters a young Megumi Fushiguro and greets him with a comically disgusted face due to his resemblance to Toji. Satoru begins to share with Megumi details about his father and their connection to the Zenin clan. He almost confesses to killing Toji, but Megumi interrupts, expressing his lack of interest in his father because of the abandonment. Megumi reveals that Tsumiki's mother also disappeared, and he believes the adults left the two step-siblings alone. Despite Megumi's young age, Satoru is surprised by his intuition and assures him they can discuss his father whenever he's ready.
Satoru suggests going to the Zenin clan, and Megumi asks if Tsumiki would be happy there. Satoru, being honest, conveys that Tsumiki wouldn't be happy there at all. This honesty irritates Megumi, but Satoru pats him on the head and reassures him that everything will be fine. He only asks that Megumi becomes strong enough to keep up with him.
Jujutsu Kaisen Season 2 Episode 5 ends on a high note as decade later, Satoru wakes up to the sounds of his three students, including a teenage Megumi. While Yuji and Nobara engage in playful banter over the chair Satoru was sleeping in, Megumi notices Satoru smiling and inquires about the reason. Proud and delighted to witness Megumi's growth, Satoru happily assures him that it's nothing.
