Shangri-La Frontier Episode 4 - Anime Recap

Shangri-La Frontier Episode 4 begins where the Episode 3 has ended. At Rock Roll Game Shop, Rei searches for Sunraku, but Mana informs her that he's likely engrossed in playing Shangri-La Frontier. Despite Rei's efforts, she hasn't been able to find him. Mana, chuckling, remarks that it's typical for a player like Sunraku to skip the first town, labeling him a "trash game player." She encourages Rei to keep looking for him and express her feelings. This suggestion makes Rei blush.

Shangri-La Frontier Episode 4 Anime Recap

Meanwhile, Sunraku is exploring unique scenarios for new players in the game. He discovers a quest called "Tour to Rabituza," where players need to defeat a higher-level monster with Vorpal weapons equipped. This summons a Vorpal Bunny in town, leading players to Rabituza. Upon defeating the Ravenous Snake there, players learn the "Enchant Vorpal" spell. However, Sunraku recounts encountering a different scenario, facing Vysache instead of the Ravenous Snake. Vysache is impressed with Sunraku's Vorpal Soul and challenges him to a training quest. Sunraku gladly accepts, referring to Vysache as "Aniki" (Yakuza superior).

During the training, Vysache stands up in a scary manner, making Sunraku worry if he said something wrong. However, Vysache laughs, expressing his liking for Sunraku and declaring him his underling. Vysache then assigns Emul to take care of Sunraku. Emul, excited, promises to work hard and offers to show Sunraku around. Sunraku, desiring a break from gaming, decides to explore the inn with Emul.

As Vysache leaves, he realizes he almost forgot something and tosses a Vorpal Soul Collar to Sunraku. The collar, once equipped, cuts received experience in half but grants 2.5x stat points when leveling up. Vysache emphasizes that the collar cannot be removed unless he says so, asserting that hardships are necessary for the weak to become stronger. Frustrated, Sunraku laments being subjected to another restriction.

Sunraku continues his online search but realizes that no one else seems to know about Emul or the Vorpal Soul Collar scenario. Excited by the idea that he is the only one with this knowledge, he checks the time and realizes it's almost time for his appointment. Sunraku takes out the Berserk Online Passion (BOP) VR game and logs in.

BOP is a somewhat unpopular fighting game that Sunraku has become deeply involved in. With a dwindling player base of fewer than a hundred sign-ins per day, most of the players know each other. Sunraku encounters "Modor Katzo," who has been waiting for him. They decide to engage in a fight with no rules. Katzo activates a glitch, extending his arms and legs, a new move he developed while Sunraku played Fearia.

Impressed by Katzo's discovery, Sunraku uses Quick-Draw Fist to block all of Katzo's attacks. He explains that Quick-Draw Fist is the ultimate style, allowing players to counter boss insta-kill attacks as long as they have twelve frames. As famous BOP players, Sunraku and Katzo quickly attract an audience. Sunraku seemingly "cuts" one of Katzo's arms, but the afterimage fist textures still hit him, surprising both players. Sunraku loses, but the PvP experience recharges him after fighting only NPCs for a while.

Katzo, surprised that Sunraku has started playing Shangri-La Frontier (SLF), learns that the game features seven unique monsters known as The Seven Colossi. Only the names of four are known, and no one has defeated any of them. Sunraku fought one but lost, and he has no intention of stopping until he beats that monster. Katzo, considering joining SLF, mentions that none of his real-life friends play BOP anymore. He informs Sunraku that another acquaintance plays SLF and has been told about Sunraku's involvement.

In another location, Arthur Pencilgon receives a message from Katzo, informing her that Sunraku has started playing SLF. While engaging in SLF combat, Pencilgon is surprised that Sunraku is playing something other than a trash game and decides she should "guide" him through the game.

Sunraku returns to Shangri-La Frontier (SLF) and teams up with Emul to head to Secondil. He expresses his desire to explore Rabituza but aims to reach Thirdrema before the summer break influx of players. Emul, not fully understanding his plan, agrees to help him and sends a party request, revealing her higher overall stats. Sunraku wonders if Emul is compensation for having Lycagon's Mark.

As they venture through Secondil, some girls spot Sunraku and Emul and become excited, curious about how he acquired a talking pet, especially a Vorpal Bunny. Sunraku, wanting to keep the unique scenario a secret, hastily runs away with Emul. Despite his efforts, one of the girls manages to take a screenshot and plans to ask online about taming a Vorpal Bunny.

Outside of Secondil, Sunraku tests his curse by seeing if lower-level monsters will run away. A ram charges at him, but upon recognizing his curse, it changes direction and flees. Sunraku chases it down and successfully lands a critical hit using his inertia. Despite the curse, he realizes he can still hunt lower-level monsters. Determined, he decides to head directly for the area boss.

Arriving at a swamp area where the area boss, Mud Digger, is supposed to be, Sunraku doesn't immediately spot it. Emul explains that Mud Digger is a monster that rockets out of the ground to attack, emphasizing the importance of finding a way to hold it in place. Sunraku, struggling to move well in the swamp, realizes he'll likely have to face the boss there.

Shangri-La Frontier Episode 4 ends on a high note as in SLF, the swamp terrain forces a "walking state," with one leg always trapped until the other reaches the bottom. As they approach, the Mud Digger area boss makes its appearance.
